Castleview School

British Values at Castleview

The DfE have reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Castleview, these values are reinforced regularly and have strong links with our school values. British values are discussed and taught in the following ways:

Democracy

(Links to school values: Teamwork, Resilience, Kindness and Respect)

  • Children’s views are represented through Pupil Leadership groups and through other processes in the school.
  • The importance of Democracy is promoted through PSRHE lessons.
  • Elections are held for the Pupil Leadership groups, and the children participate fully in the election of their peers to represent them.

The Rule of Law

(Links to school values: Teamwork, Kindness and Respect)

  • Children and staff understand and follow our behaviour policy, and children are encouraged to reflect on their actions.
  • The understanding of the value of laws and rules comes through the consistent application of our behaviour policy.
  • Class discussions of rights and responsibilities take place at the start of each year and through the year as necessary.
  • Our home school agreement is signed by parents, staff and children.

Individual liberty

(Links to school values: Ambition, Creativity, Kindness and Respect)

  • Children are encouraged and taught to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Children are taught how to keep themselves safe on-line, in school, in the community and in the wider world.
  • Individual differences are valued within the school community, for example when celebrating different festivals.

Mutual Respect

(Links to school values: Kindness and Respect)

  • Children are taught to respect everyone.
  • Respect is taught throughout our curriculum, including learning from the past and through English texts.
  • Our Resource Base for pupils with Special Educational Needs promotes respect for those with differences throughout the school.
  • We are a culturally diverse school that welcomes people from all countries, religious and ethnic backgrounds. This diversity is celebrated.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

(Links to school values: Teamwork, Kindness and Respect)

  • Children are taught about other faiths through our RE curriculum.
  • Our RE scheme of work teaches children about different world religions and celebrates the similarities and differences between them.
  • We celebrate diversity throughout the school, including by marking special festival days and celebrating different cultures that are represented.
  • We welcome visitors from a wide range of traditions, faiths and backgrounds into school.
